Welcome to the School of Anaesthesia
- Details
We pride ourselves in being one of the longest established schools of anaesthesia. First established in 1997, we enjoy an excellent reputation in terms of the training we provide, both clinical and academic, and have good pass rates for the FRCA exams.
The region is geographically compact providing training in three tertiary referral centres:
- Alder Hey Children's Hospital
- Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital
- Walton Neurosciences Centre
Two teaching hospitals:
- The Royal Liverpool University Hospital NHS Trust
- University Hospital Aintree
and seven District General Hospitals.
Training is efficiently and sympathetically organised by the two programme directors This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (Core) and This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. (Specialist).
Many of the trusts provide regular education/ teaching sessions. In addition, there are a number of regional teaching programmes. For Core trainees monthly sessions are held which cover basic science topics (“BASICS”), as well as introductory sessions to Obstetric Anaesthesia (“BOAD”), Intensive Care (“MICC”) and Transfer Medicine (MOCC). For Specialty trainees classroom based sessions are held approximately monthly (“MAFIT”). Primary and Final FRCA exam courses are provided by the Mersey Series of Anaesthesia which enjoys a high reputation nationally with primary pass rates of between 69% and 93%.
There is a monthly post-fellowship meeting, organised by the trainees themselves.
The Liverpool Society of Anaesthesia was established in 1930 and is a thriving, active society with more than 200 subscribing consultant members (trainees' membership is free), providing a forum for educational meetings for consultants and trainees alike, as well as a social networking venue.
Information about individual trusts can be found in the individual trust document.
