Career development for SAS doctors
- Details
Mersey Deanery has over 600 SAS doctors. Many work at a high level and with little direct or no supervision.
Some SAS doctors want the opportunity to move into training grade posts with a view to developing their skills and gaining CCT (certificate of completion of training) to enable them to get on the specialist register and compete for consultant posts.
It is now possible for SAS doctors – and others- to apply to the GMC for a CESR (Certificate of Equivalence to Specialist Register). Successful applicants are then eligible to apply for consultant posts.
Many SAS doctors have had difficulty accessing study leave, career advice, mentorship and training and development opportunities. They have had little support to develop leadership and management skills and many are heavily involved in teaching and training both undergraduates and postgraduates.
National Developments
The new contract establishing the specialty doctor grade includes at least one programmed activity per week for CPD. The Department of Health guidelines provides a template for optimum support for this group of doctors. DH funding is now ring-fenced for this purpose.
