OOPR: Out of Programme for Research
OOPT: Out of Programme for Clinical Training
Trainees can also apply for an extension to OOP.
The Mersey Deanery is piloting a single form that replaces its pre-existing four forms.
Who needs to sign the OOP Form?
Your Programme Director, Educational Supervisor at the time of leave and Postgraduate, Deputy or Associate Dean.

Do I need to supply any additional documentation?
Trainees undertaking OOPT and wish to count towards need to supply the following additional documentation for the Deanery to apply to GMC for approval:
PSYCHIATRY Trainees undertaking OOPT to "act up" in a Consultant Post do not require Royal College or GMC approval. Only 3 months of “acting up” will count towards training during the last 12 months of training.
SURGERYTrainees will need to apply for SAC support BEFORE you apply to the Deanery, along with the documentation stated below plus a current CV and signed offer letter. TRAUMA AND ORTHOPAEDICS trainees are also required to submit 2 logbooks from the previous incumbents of the post.
- Royal College Approval Letter
- A timetable for the post
- Educational goals for the post
- JRCPTB Trainees ONLY: JRCPTB Form
- If the post has GMC Approval, letter from placement confirming GMC Approval Code.
- If the post does not have GMC Approval, written confirmation from the local hospital that the post receives educational recognition from the appropriate local/national bodies.
Trainees undertaking OOPR and wish to count towards need to supply the following additional documentation for the Deanery to apply to GMC for approval:
- Royal College Approval Letter
- Statement detailing the purpose and structure of the placement.
- Name, contact address and telephone number of your clinical and educational supervisor.
- JRCPTB Trainees ONLY: JRCPTB Form
- ANAESTHESIA Trainees ONLY also need to complete the Royal College form submitted to Royal College ONLY
- PATHOLOGY Trainees (excluding Haematology) ONLY also need to complete the Royal College form submitted to Royal College ONLY
Trainees undertaking OOPE need to supply the additional documentation:
- Completed and signed OOP form
- Statement detailing the purpose and structure of the placement.
- Name, contact address and telephone number of your clinical and educational supervisor.
Trainees undertaking OOPC need to supply the additional documentation:
- Statement detailing reasons why applying for OOPC
Who do I send the OOP Form to and by when?
Completed OOP forms need to be sent to their Postgraduate School Administrator.
Trainees should give 6 months notice.
I wish to extend my OOP. What do I do?
You need to completed Section 2.5 of the Out of Programme Form and supply:
- Educational Supervisors Report to support application.
- Statement detailing reasons why applying for extension.
6 months notice required.
I do not wish to return to the Training Programme when my OOP finishes. Do I need to inform anyone?
You need to formally advise the Mersey Deanery School Administrator and Lead Employer of your intentions, 3 months notice is required.
I will be returning to the rotation once my OOP finishes. Do I need to inform anyone?
You need to advise the Mersey Deanery School Administrator and Lead Employer of your intentions, 3 months notice is required.
Should I keep my GMC registration up to date while on OOP?
The Deanery would recommend that trainees on OOP do not seek to remove themselves from the GMC Register. Further information on this topic can be found at the following :
