Further Information

LTFT trainees generally work 60% of their full time hours. There is provision to work more than 60%, but this is negotiated on an individual basis with the Associate Dean and requires identification of specific educational need.

Mersey Deanery follows the principles set out in the document produced by NHS Employers (attached to email).

This gives a clear understanding of the principles on which Less than Full Time training is provided. The Deanery work to ensure that trainees working Less than Full Time are offered the same opportunities as a Full Time trainee.

Payment and Remuneration

Information on remuneration is contained in the document ‘Equitable pay for doctors in training’ and the BMA document ‘Revised Remuneration Arrangements’.

Hours

Mersey Deanery currently allows CT1, 2 and 3 in Psychiatry and STs 1 and 2 to work five sessions (20 hours) per week (not including on-call), over a 12 month period i.e. six months while time equivalent; providing that they are Hospital Doctors. Trainees undertaking General Practice Vocational Training Schemes can work six sessions (24 hours) per week over a 10 month period i.e. six month whole time equivalent. This does not include any banding requirements.

ST3 and above and Specialist Registrars (SpR) currently work a minimum of five sessions (20 hours) per-week, or maximum of six sessions (24 hours) per-week. This doesn’t include any on calls.

On Call Commitment

Mersey Deanery does not fund any aspect of an on call commitment. The Trust where the trainee is based advises if there is an on call commitment and if they are in a position to fund it. Mersey Deanery will onlt fund the basic hours i.e. the education and training component.

Training Programmes

All LTFT trainees must have a timetable which is devised by the Training Programme Director for Specialist Registrars or the Educational Supervisor for CT1 2 and 3 in Psychiatry and ST 1 and 2. The Royal College of the relevant specialty should prospectively approve the timetable of any doctor wishing to train flexibly. Trainees should liaise directly with Training Programme Directors or Educational Supervisors for advice on this matter. Changes to timetables need to be discussed with the Deanery.
