Thursday 28 June 2012, 10:00 - 13:00

Negotiated Work Based Learning : Developing Practice Skills

HEAL 403 Level 7 20 Credits

What is NWBL?

In healthcare delivery there is an increasing requirement for staff to extend the scope of their skills into new areas to meet with service demands. Quite often such new skills are very specialised and it would not be possible to run a “taught” module to assist the student in developing the skills.
This module provides a potential student with a unique to identify a specific area of interest and to pursue this as a specialist study option through the negotiation of a learning contract between the student, their employer and the University.
To give you a flavour as to what can be achieved with this approach to learning here are a few examples where NWBL has been used effectively to develop clinical skills:

  • The development of competence framework for performing amniocentesis;
  • Evaluation of deep vein thrombosis using ultrasound

The student is assessed to evaluate whether he / she has achieved the required competence in the designated area. All of this is supported by University Tutorials.
Assessment is typically by a combination of coursework (production of learning contract) and portfolio.
