The Unit provides core obstetric ultrasound training and specialist clinics including colposcopy, vulval disorders and infertility. Minimal access surgery (including endoscopic uterine surgery) is well established in the department.

The Department has a well-established training programme with rolling monthly half-day Audit/Education sessions. In addition, there are weekly labour ward case conferences and gynaecological tumour boards. Fortnightly colposcopy clinicopathological cases conferences are also held. In addition, a Grand Round occurs on Friday lunchtime. The K2 CTG training package is mandatory for all staff working on the obstetric unit. Fourth year undergraduates from the University of Manchester attend for clinical training.

The on-call is a fully compliant shift shared between 7 SPRs and 2 staff Grades. Advanced Midwifery Practioners work out of hours and are able to perform assessment of admissions, advanced CTG interpretation and fetal blood sampling in labour.
