Dr Richard Cooke took over the role of Head of School for Pathology for Dr Niamh Leonard in July 2011. He is a Consultant Medical Microbiologist at the University Hospital Aintree. Dr Cooke has had a long term interest in education and training, obtaining the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education in 2004.

Through the Mersey Deanery he has been an educational supervisor and STEC Chair for Medical Microbiology for a number of years. For the Royal College of Pathologists, he has been an examiner for FRCPath since 2004, Regional Advisor for Medical Microbiology for 2007 to 2011 and is the current Chair of the College Advisory Training Team (CATT) for Medical Microbiology.
