Training the Trainer Workshops for the North West School of Public Health 2011 Draft Programme Content
Workshop 1: 15th March
An introductory/intermediate level workshop for new trainers and those existing trainers who need to familiarise themselves with or have a refresher on working with the new curriculum.
Learning Outcomes:
- To understand what is required to produce a high performing, effective PH consultant at the end of training
- To understand how to use the key elements of the public health training curriculum
- To understand the principles of learning that underpin the training scheme
- To be able to draw up effective learning agreements
- To be able to support the Specialty Registrar in developing an excellent e-portfolio
- To understand the RITA/ARCP process and what is required of the Educational Supervisor
- To understand what is required of an Educational Supervisor in supporting the Specialty Registrar with the Part A and Part B: OSPHE exams
Pre-course Preparation:
- Familiarity with a range of Faculty and North West School of Public Health documents about the training scheme and exam requirements.
- Familiarity with the Mersey Deanery levels of accreditation and GMC Standards for Educational Supervisors
Programme Content:
- The role of the Educational Supervisor
- Using delegates’ personal experience, explore what is required from the PH training scheme in order to ensure that Specialty Registrars are fully prepared for a consultant role,.
- An overview of the Training Scheme – the Training Pathway
- An introduction to the Training Curriculum and how it is to be used in planning, training & assessing competence including:
- Selecting appropriate pieces of work for the three phases
- Learning outcomes
- Performance criteria & standards
- Evidence
- Drawing up an appropriate Learning Agreement
- Understand the e-portfolio and how to support Specialty Registrars in self-directed learning (including reflective writing)
- Understanding the RITA/ARCP process and the Educational Supervisor’s role in supporting the assessment process (including writing Supervisory reports)
- How to support Specialty Registrars through Part A and Part B: OSPHE exams
- Personal Development Planning
Workshop 2 - 16th March
An intermediate level workshop for new trainers and existing trainers who need to develop or enhance the core skills of a trainer.
Learning Outcomes
- To understand different styles of supervision and when to use them
- To understand the coaching process and be able to apply basic coaching skills
- To be able to carry out an appraisal interview
- To be able to assess competence in leadership and other people skills
- To be able to give feedback effectively using a range of tools and techniques
Pre-course Preparation
- Familiarity with a range of North West School and Faculty documents about the training scheme and exam requirements.
- Some directed reading on coaching, appraisal and feedback
What is assumed
- Knowledge of the School expectations of an Edcuational Supervisor (summarised in Supervisors’ appointment letters, and on the Faculty web site)
- Experience of training, including some supervision of Speciality Registrars
Programme Content:
- A developmental model of supervisory styles
- The basics of coaching to include
- The coaching process
- Basic skills such as questioning, listening and response styles
- The briefing process
- Coaching on simple problems
- Debriefing
- The appraisal interview: the process and skills
- Assessing competence in leadership and other people skills by
- Identifying suitable learning opportunities to stretch and challenge the Speciality Registrar
- Using the training curriculum to understand and apply the learning outcomes, performance criteria and standards and evidence required for these areas
- Applying the Behavioural Event interviewing technique
- Giving feedback including the use of multi-source feedback tools
- Personal Development Planning
Note: This is a skill-based workshop with opportunities for skills practice
Workshop 3 - 24th March
An advanced level workshop for experienced trainers who want to build on their existing skills as a trainer particularly in supporting Specialty Registrars who are having difficulties with achieving the required standards, or in supporting highly performing Specialty Registrars to excel..
Learning Outcomes
- To have an understanding of the different types and causes of problems and difficulties that Specialty Registrars may experience in training
- To develop high level coaching skills
- To understand the need to develop different personal coaching styles using MBTI typology
- To be able to able to carry out poor performance and bad news interviews
- To have a strategy for identifying and developing the high performing Specialty Registrar.
Pre-course Preparation
- Familiarity with a range of North West School and Faculty documents about the training scheme and exam requirements.
- Familiarisation with the Mersey Deanery policies for “Doctors in difficulty”
- Some directed reading on coaching, appraisal and feedback
- Case study preparation
What is assumed
- Knowledge of the School expectations of an Edcuational Supervisor (summarised in Supervisors’ appointment letters, and on the Faculty web site)
- Significant experience as a trainer
Programme Content:
- Early recognition, and understanding the causes, of problems and difficulties that Specialty Registrars may experience
- A strategy for identifying and developing the high performing Specialty Registrar.
- Developing high level coaching skills to include:
- Probing and the use of rich questions
- Challenging and reframing
- Empathy
- Constructive criticism
- Recognising personal coaching styles and adapting them for different MBTI typologies
- Understanding the process and practicing the techniques of a poor performance interview
- Practicing giving bad news.
- Personal Development Planning
Note: This is a skill-based workshop with opportunities for skills practice using personal case studies where appropriate
