New Specialty Registrars

Regional Induction programme

Public Health Trainees Induction 2010

The Buddy Scheme

Your Educational Supervisor is your line manager, and can help or guide you with many things in training and employment. You may also approach your Training Programme Director, or the Head of School for advice and support on training matters. And your employer on employment matters.

But working in a new organisation and in a new role may bring a level of apprehension and stress for new Specialty Registrars. Forward thinking organisations use buddy schemes which can make a difference to how new people settle in. In our case a buddy is a fellow StR and they act as an informal guide to ‘signpost’ new Registrars or simply clarify points or answer queries. On commencement of Training, an existing StR will make themselves known to new StRs as their Buddy. Their function is to make themselves available to:

  • respond to the day-to-day queries that new StRs face,
  • help answer queries that they haven't been able to resolve or,
  • are simply too embarrassed to ask anyone about!

The North West School of Public Health values all of its StRs and wishes to ensure that new people entering onto the Training Scheme have access to good quality support. Just knowing that somebody is there to listen and is genuinely interested in helping can be very supportive in the early stages of a Specialty Registrar’s training.
